ALTERNATIVE FUEL VEHICLES & HOW THEY WORK
MHEV – MILD HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLE
Similar to a hybrid vehicle but with a smaller battery. MHEVs cannot run on the battery alone, so combines electric power with a petrol or diesel engine.
PHEV – PLUG-IN HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLE
Uses a battery to power an electric motor and either petrol or diesel to power an internal combustion engine (ICE). The vehicle runs on the battery until it is depleted, it then switches to the ICE.
REX – RANGE EXTENDER
Runs on a battery but has a small ICE to generate additional electric power to go further than a standard EV on a single charge.
EV – ELECTRIC VEHICLE
Runs purely on the battery with no ICE. Electric vehicles are better on the environment and the general wear and tear of the workings of the vehicle.
CNG – COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS
Made by compressing natural gas (methane). It is safer to use than petrol or diesel because it is non-toxic.
LNG – LIQUID NATURAL GAS
The cleanest burning fuel available, producing around 20% less C02 than diesel.
FCEV – HYDROGEN FUEL CELL
Future development of alternative fuels sees the dawn of the hydrogen fuel cell. FCEVs run by converting hydrogen into electricity via a fuel cell. FCEVs do not produce any exhaust emissions, they only emit water vaper and warm air.

UK’S FIRST ASTRA 7.2 TONNE DAILY EV CONVERSION
Chassis conversion specialist Astra vehicle technologies is working with Guest Truck and Van to produce an electric 7.2 tonne Iveco Daily.
The vehicle, which will have a range of up to 220km, will be fitted with a caged tipper body for customer Ringway, a company providing highway services in London.
Astra removed the standard diesel engine and gearbox and replaced it with an integrated zero emission electric drive train. Astra vehicle technologies owner John Chadderton, said ‘This is a first for the UK in terms of converting a vehicle in this weight range to electric. The conversion process is not just about moving in engine and bolting on a motor, it’s about seamlessly integrating electric power into all of the primary and ancillary systems of vehicle, such as steering, breaking and original manufacturer control systems.’
Guest Truck and Van, the UK’s leading Iveco vehicle dealer, supplied the vehicle and sported Astra in ensuring that the conversion was fully integrated in line with the functionality associated with Iveco vehicles.
The conversion systems have been custom-designed to integrate into the Iveco Daily chassis, with Technical Support from Guest Truck and Van and remotely from Elita, the Lithuanian traction motor and battery supplier, through video conferencing, enabling the process to continue throughout the COVID-19 pandemic period.
